About the Position:

The Department of Political Science at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC) invites applications for a tenured Associate Professor or Professor position with a specialization in cybersecurity, beginning in August 2025.  UMBC is a Carnegie Foundation R1 (Doctoral University – Very high research activity), community-engaged, minority-serving institution focused on inclusive excellence.

This position is part of a multi-year, campus-wide, and state-supported hiring initiative to develop the UMBC Cybersecurity Institute (UCI).  The UCI builds upon a strong foundation established under the UMBC Cybersecurity Center (UCYBR) over the past decade, which today comprises over thirty faculty members from six departments across all colleges at UMBC.  UCI-affiliated faculty members will have a tenured appointment in their respective home departments but are expected to collaborate across disciplines to develop as part of a cohort of new faculty members with complementary expertise in the rapidly expanding field of cybersecurity.

UMBC is a dynamic and growing public research university located in the Baltimore-Washington corridor, an area rich in scholarly resources and opportunities, especially in the area of cybersecurity.  We have more than 14,000 undergraduate and graduate students.  UMBC routinely ranks among the top universities in the country for undergraduate teaching and innovation in U.S. News and World Report.  In addition, the Chronicle of Higher Education recognizes UMBC as one its “Great Colleges to Work For.”  In doing so, the Chronicle cites the university as one of only 11 institutions nationwide (and one of only two universities with the Carnegie R1 classification) to excel in all 10 recognition categories.

We are especially proud of our diverse student population (https://umbc.edu/about/) and our designation by the U.S. Department of Education as a minority-serving institution (MSI).  Because we hope to attract an equally diverse applicant pool for this position, candidates from diverse backgrounds, including women and under-represented minorities, are particularly encouraged to apply.  UMBC has a strong commitment to equity and social justice.  To learn more about the Department of Political Science, visit https://politicalscience.umbc.edu/ and https://politicalscience.umbc.edu/commitment-to-diversity-equity-and-inclusion/.

UMBC is an Affirmative Action/Equal Opportunity Employer.
