About the Position:

The University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC) Global Studies Program invites applications for a lecturer in global studies. We are looking for a colleague who is competent and passionate about teaching and mentoring diverse undergraduate students for global competence. Preferably, candidates would have academic expertise in a field within global studies, a PhD in the social sciences or humanities by August 2024, and at least one year of teaching experience in higher education as an instructor of record.

The ideal candidate will excel in teaching core interdisciplinary courses of the Global Studies curriculum (Introduction to Global Studies, Research Methods in Global Studies, Approaches to Globalization) and electives in their thematic fields of interest, such as global health, environmental policy, economic development, international business, and human rights. Area studies courses with a global or transnational perspective are also desirable. The lecturer will teach six courses per year, mentor undergraduate students in research and internships, and contribute in service to the program in a collaborative and diverse work environment. This is a non-tenure-track position with the possibility of contract renewals and promotion to the ranks of senior and principal lecturer.

We are looking for candidates with a strong commitment to inclusive excellence to ensure that students of varied social and disciplinary backgrounds and identities can succeed academically and develop global competence. We also want a colleague who can contribute to the overall development of the Global Studies Program. Experience or interest in teaching short-term summer or winter courses abroad for an additional salary is a plus.

UMBC is a Carnegie Research 1, community-engaged, minority-serving institution focused on inclusive excellence. We are strategically located between Washington D.C. and Baltimore, only six miles from the Baltimore-Washington International Airport. Founded in 2013, the Global Studies Program combines interdisciplinary coursework, foreign languages, and study abroad to promote inquiry into the global dimensions of the ecological, economic, cultural, ideological, and political issues of our day. Our undergraduate majors travel the world to study languages and cultures; on campus they study the global-local nexus and work on many projects including the cultivation of urban green spaces and the resettlement of refugee families in Baltimore.

To apply, candidates must submit:

  • A curriculum vitae.
  • A teaching statement.
  • One to three items that demonstrate teaching effectiveness, such as syllabi, student evaluations, and assignments.
  • A statement of commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion in higher education, discussing how to respond in pedagogically productive ways to the learning needs of students from diverse backgrounds.

For best consideration, please submit all application materials through Interfolio (http://apply.interfolio.com/151590) by October 4th, 2024. Potential candidates are welcome to contact Dr. Felipe Filomeno, chair of the search committee, with any questions (filomeno@umbc.edu).

Screening of Applications Begins: Review of application materials will begin October 4th, 2024 and will continue until the position is filled.
