About the Position:

The Department of Political Science at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC) invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position in International Relations with a specialization in China, East Asian international relations, and international political economy, beginning in August 2026. UMBC is a Carnegie Research 1, community-engaged, minority-serving institution focused on inclusive excellence. 

The Department is searching for a candidate who will teach 5 courses a year, typically distributed over two courses each semester, with one introductory level course and one upper division course in the successful applicant's field of specialization each semester. Candidates must maintain an active research agenda and participate in the Department's advising and service responsibilities, as well as meet the very highest standards of teaching quality.

This position is one of four positions in a cluster hire in Asian Studies. UMBC is searching for Asian Studies specialists in Ancient Studies, History, Philosophy, and Political Science. Faculty hired as part of the cluster will have opportunities to collaborate across disciplines and develop alongside a cohort of new faculty members with an interest in Asian Studies. Though the new faculty members will be housed in their respective academic departments, they will also be affiliate faculty in, and contribute to the success of, the interdisciplinary Asian Studies Program at UMBC through their course offerings, participation in research seminars, and engagement with Asia-related programming on campus.

Candidates must hold a Ph.D. in Political Science/International Relations. If ABD, they must earn their Ph.D. by date of hire.

Salary Range: $88,000 - $92,000 commensurate with experience

The above salary range represents the University’s good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting.
