The University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC) has an internal opportunity for the Director, Goddard Planetary Heliophysics Institute (GPHI) Center. This is an internal only search open to current UMBC employees.
GPHI is funded primarily by a Cooperative Agreement with the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center (GSFC) led by Catholic University of America of which UMBC is a partner. It has a research staff of approximately 20 research faculty scientists, who collaborate with scientists at GSFC and other entities in The Heliophysics Science Division (HSD) of NASA Goddard Space Flight Center including five laboratories that conduct research on the Sun, solar wind, Geospace, ionosphere, thermosphere, mesosphere, and space weather. The GPHI Director provides the overall scientific vision and leadership for the Center and serves as the Center's principal interface to CUA Director, to the UMBC leadership and academic community. The Director, in collaboration with the PHaSER partners, is responsible for the overall management of the Center, and for the scientific quality and integrity of the research performed by the Center's research faculty and staff, who are located at GSFC.
The GPHI Director brings a demonstrated portfolio of scientific and technical expertise in heliophsyic sciences and holds a distinguished research portfolio and reputation in a related and relevant area. As part of this position, the GPHI Director will be expected to devote a significant amount of time on research and is expected to actively contribute to the education and mentorship of early career scientists.
Position requires a PhD. Must be a current UMBC employee (faculty/staff).
As GPHI Director the incumbent reports directly to the Vice President for Research at UMBC.
UMBC has a history of over a quarter Century of successful cooperative partnerships with GSFC, with over 200 faculty, scientist and researchers actively working in several research centers. In addition to GPHI, UMBC is working with GSFC under the Center for Space Sciences and Technology (CSST – csst.umbc.edu), and the The Goddard Earth Sciences Technology and Research II (GESTAR II- GESTAR.UMBC.edu). UMBC is currently ranked at #15 in NASA funding among all U.S. Colleges and Universities.
Salary Range: $125,000 to $190,000
The above salary range represents the University’s good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting.
