About the Position:

Assistant/Associate Professor (Tenure-Track) in Dance

The University of Maryland Baltimore County (UMBC) Department of Dance seeks an Assistant/Associate Professor of Dance (rank to be determined based on qualifications) beginning August 23, 2024. As a movement specialist in Contemporary Release Technique, Contact Improvisation, Composition, Improvisation, and Choreography, teach undergraduate degree required courses in all these areas. Teach students how to engage creatively through a process of unpacking movement and compositional principles, physically and verbally, that guides students in ways to engage with the moving body as an instrument from which they can produce and represent a broad range of voices and individualized approaches to dance. Position requires Master of Fine Arts (M.F.A.) in Dance or Ph.D. in Dance. Two years of experience teaching dance at the undergraduate college level. Ability to teach all levels of Release-based Contemporary Dance, Contact Improvisation, Somatics, Kinesiology for Dancers, Improvisation, Dance and Technology, and Dance Composition. Mentor student choreographers at all levels, including senior capstone course. Direct/lead study abroad dance program.

The Dance Department resides in UMBC’s new Performing Arts and Humanities Building, which features large, fully equipped studios and state-of-the-art performing spaces. The department values innovation and is particularly interested in scholars who are thinking about the changing world of dance, and what it means to be a dancer or dance artist today and into the future.

Accredited by the National Association of Schools of Dance, UMBC offers B.A. in Dance and a Dance Minor. Department enrollment includes approximately 45 dance majors and 10 dance minors. Responsibilities

  • Teach all levels of Release-based Contemporary Dance Technique, Contact Improvisation, Composition, Improvisation, and Choreography courses
  • Teach students how to engage creatively through a process of unpacking movement and compositional principles, physically and verbally, that guides students in ways to engage with the moving body as an instrument from which they can produce and represent a broad range of voices and individualized approaches to dance
  • Ability to teach Somatics, Kinesiology for Dancers, and Dance and Technology
  • Mentor student choreographers at all levels, including senior capstone course and undergraduate research award (URA) projects
  • Maintain a significant level of research/creative professional practice commensurate with advancement toward promotion and tenure
  • Participate in department and university governance
  • Direct/lead study abroad dance program
  • Advise dance majors

Required Qualifications

  • Master of Fine Arts (MFA) in Dance or Ph.D. in Dance
  • Two years of experience teaching dance at the undergraduate level
  • Ability to teach all levels of Release-based Contemporary Dance, Contact Improvisation, Somatics, Kinesiology for Dancers, Improvisation, Dance and Technology, and Dance Composition.
  • Ability to mentor student choreographers at all levels, including senior capstone course
  • Ability to direct/lead study abroad program
  • Demonstrated professional artistic accomplishment
