About the Position:

The Department of Music at UMBC seeks an Assistant Professor (full-time, tenure track) in Piano Performance, to begin August 23, 2025. As an active performer, this individual will be responsible for teaching and successfully recruiting piano performance majors, with additional teaching, advising, and service responsibilities assigned based on candidate expertise and departmental needs.  

The successful applicant will be an active performer who is experienced in classical and contemporary art music. This individual will be a skilled soloist and chamber musician and will perform with the faculty contemporary ensemble Ruckus as well as in other faculty chamber music performances. Demonstrated excellence in teaching piano is required. We welcome candidates who may have expertise in musics of other cultural traditions that reflect the candidate’s areas of interest and abilities.   A secondary research area is not required, but may include composition, conducting, or music history or theory. Applicants who demonstrate a commitment to diversity and inclusion by way of teaching, performing, publishing, or volunteer experiences are urged to submit an application.

Salary competitive. Doctorate preferred, or M.M. with equivalent performance experience required; successful teaching of undergraduate level students or equivalent graduate training is desired. The applicant should send a current CV; a cover letter detailing qualifications and addressing the candidate’s academic, professional, and teaching preparedness; links to up to 15 minutes of music; and current contact information for three references. Additionally, all candidates must submit a separate statement addressing their capacity to respond in pedagogically productive ways to the learning needs of students from diverse backgrounds with specific examples.  Additional materials may be requested at a later date.

Salary:

Salary Range: $76,000 - $82,000 commensurate with experience

The above salary range represents the University’s good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting.
