About the Position:

The Department of American Studies at the University of Maryland Baltimore County (UMBC) invites applications for a full-time Lecturer in American Studies, starting in August 2025. We seek a candidate with teaching experience in introductory American Studies courses with a specialization in at least one of the following areas or fields: Indigenous cultural studies, Black cultural studies, and/or critical mixed race or comparative race studies, or critical ethnic studies.

The position involves teaching four courses per semester (eight total for the year) and service to the department. We seek a candidate who would be open to teaching large lecture courses for the department. The candidate will augment our department’s existing strengths in public humanities and ethnic studies.

We seek a candidate with teaching experience in American Studies or a related field, such as Ethnic Studies; Indigenous Studies; Women, Gender, and Sexuality Studies; cultural or literary studies; and/or other interdisciplinary approaches to the humanities are especially welcome, as are socially-engaged scholars and researchers with community collaborative or community outreach experience. We are seeking a dynamic, engaging teacher who is committed to interdisciplinary approaches, creative pedagogy, and work in the public humanities. The salary range of the position is $60,000-$64,000 and will also include moving funds, start up funds, and a strong benefits package. Starting date is August 23, 2025.

The above salary range represents the University’s good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting.

Eligibility: To be eligible, applicants must have completed their Ph.D. in American Studies or a related field before the appointment commences on August 23, 2025.
