Open Rank Faculty Position in Mathematics and Statistics

The University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC) Department of Mathematics and Statistics invites applications for an open-rank faculty member, as related to cybersecurity (broadly defined), to begin in August 2025. The appointment is 9 months per year. Candidates should have finished their PhD in Mathematics, Applied Mathematics, Statistics, or an appropriately related field before their appointment start date. A successful candidate should have a strong background in relevant mathematical and statistical methods and possess research synergy with current faculty members.

Research interests including, but not limited to, data science and machine learning in cybersecurity, as well as quantum computation and encryption in cybersecurity, are desirable. We seek candidates who will establish vigorous, externally-funded research programs and contribute to the diversity and excellence in departmental teaching, mentoring, and service.

This position is part of a multi-year, campus-wide, and state-supported hiring initiative to develop the UMBC Cybersecurity Institute (UCI), which today comprises over thirty faculty members from six departments across all of the colleges at UMBC. UCI-affiliated faculty members will have a tenure/tenure-track appointment in their respective department, but will be expected to collaborate across disciplines and participate in a cohort of faculty members in the rapidly growing, interdisciplinary field of cybersecurity.

Applicants should submit (a) a concise cover letter; (b) a curriculum vitae (including a list of publications); (c) a statement of research; (d) a brief teaching statement; (e) a short statement on commitment to inclusive excellence in higher education; and (f) have at least three letters of recommendation submitted using the Interfolio system: https://apply.interfolio.com/159201.

Applications submitted by December 1, 2024 will be given full consideration, although applications will continue to be reviewed until the position is filled. Early application is encouraged.

A background check will be required.
